Bolt Coffee

The first independent location of Bolt Coffee, located at 61 Washington Street in downtown Providence, combines two functions: a daytime cafe and a nighttime eatery. A symmetrical bar unifies two storefronts and offers a variety of flexible seating options designed with community, social interaction, and informal gatherings in mind. Materials are used in simple, durable installations, and recycled or reused wherever possible. A stainless steel countertop, custom plywood benches and marble off-cut tables are combined with furniture both vintage and contemporary. Lighting and furniture from a few notable RISD alumni were also included in the project. The barriers that typically exist between customer and employee are dissolved as much as possible to encourage interaction and a communal atmosphere. Wooden screens and textured glass provided a soft separation between the front and back of house where separation is functionally necessary.
